Good Food Grows in South Carolina: Summer Produce, Local Partners and Better Health

July 17, 2025
Fresh, Local Food for a Healthy Summer
Summer in South Carolina brings more than just long days and warm weather. It brings fresh, local food that can help your family stay healthy. Farmers markets, roadside stands and community programs across the state are full of fruits and vegetables at their peak. And thanks to strong partnerships supported by Diabetes Free SC, it’s easier than ever for South Carolinians to bring that fresh food home.
The Health Benefits of Eating More Produce
Eating more fruits and vegetables is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent and manage chronic health conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Produce items such as squash, berries, tomatoes and leafy greens are high in fiber, water and vital nutrients. These foods help keep blood sugar steady, support digestion and help you feel full, without the added sugars and fats found in many processed meals.
For even more benefit, the American Diabetes Association recommends choosing non-starchy vegetables when possible. These include foods such as broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers, cucumbers and leafy greens. They’re naturally low in carbohydrates and calories while still providing key nutrients. You can explore a full list of non-starchy vegetables and how to use them at www.diabetes.org.
Making Fresh Food Accessible: Partners You Can Trust
Local partners are working every day to offer more healthy food across South Carolina. FoodShare South Carolina, a longtime Diabetes Free SC partner, offers fresh food boxes filled with seasonal fruits and vegetables. These boxes are distributed statewide through a network of trusted community hubs. Many locations accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and include helpful resources such as recipes and nutrition tips with each box.
FoodShare runs the VeggieRx program in partnership with primary care clinics around the state. This program provides free boxes of produce every two weeks to people living with or at risk for diabetes. Over several months, participants receive not only food but also tools and education to support healthy eating. Many have seen measurable improvements in their health, including lower A1C levels, reduced blood pressure and improved energy.
The South Carolina Department of Agriculture also plays an important role in increasing access to fresh food. Its Where To Buy Local program helps families connect with nearby farmers markets, roadside stands and community-supported agriculture programs. This online tool makes it simple to find fresh, local produce while supporting the state’s farms and small food businesses.
Simple Ways To Enjoy Summer Produce
Summer is the perfect time to try easy meals with what’s in season. Swap spaghetti noodles for roasted spaghetti squash. Build a refreshing salad with watermelon, mint and lime juice. Toss cucumbers and tomatoes with a splash of vinegar for a quick side. Blend a smoothie with spinach and fresh berries for a cool, healthy snack. Even small changes can grow into lasting habits that support better health.
Growing Healthier Communities Together
At Diabetes Free SC, we believe that healthy eating should be within reach for everyone. Through strong community partnerships, including FoodShare South Carolina, the South Carolina Department of Agriculture and local health care providers, we’re helping make that a reality. When communities come together around fresh food, they grow stronger, healthier and more connected.
Let’s make the most of what’s growing this season and take another step toward a healthier South Carolina.
